Rachel Valler reviews Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice - Reviewed by Rachel Valler, Pianist

Scots College, Bellevue Hill, Sunday 26th June 2009, 2:30 pm
Conductor: Anthony Clarke
Soloist: Maria Lindsay
Guest conductor Anthony Clarke produced a romantic programme which had tremendous appeal for the audience.

Bizet’s Orchestral Suite 'Carmen', with familiar themes from his opera of the same title, displayed skills from all sections of the orchestra. There were a few tentative moments in the lyrical passages, but generally this was an exciting introduction to the afternoon.

Maria Lindsay played the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto superbly, with lyricism and rhythmic vitality. She showed amazingly agile technique in the fast passages, while maintaining a sweet tone.

Dvorak’s Symphony in E minor, “From the New World” starts in a subdued fashion. But then the orchestra bursts forth with exuberance. The cor anglais solo in the second movement was quite beautiful. The woodwind section needed a bit more coherence, but in the later movements a rich string sound emerged, with dramatic brass flourishes.

Overall, this concert marked an increased proficiency in the Woollahra Philharmonic, with a fine choice of programme.
