Connections
2:00pm, 25th March, 2012
St. Francis of Assisi Church, 463 Oxford St, Paddington.
It all started with Nepomuk Hummel (Bassoon Concerto), who taught Felix Mendelssohn (Hebrides Overture), who inspired Elena Kats-Chernin (Innocent Clouds)! “Connections” is a first: the first concert of our season and our first at the St Francis of Assisi church in Paddington. The rare Hummel Bassoon Concerto will be played by soloist Kim Walker (Dean Emeritus, Sydney Conservatorium of Music). Kim also plays Bruch’s relective Kol Nidrei, in a bassoon arrangement of the original cello part. To liven things up we finish with three pieces which throb with rhythm, vitality and vigore: Saint Saens’ evocative Dance Macabre, Duffy’s Three Jewish Portraits, and Leonard Bernstein’s On The Town: Three Dance Episodes.
The Great Heritage Concert
5:00pm, 1st April, 2012
The Great Synagogue, 187a Elizabeth St, Sydney.
The Great Heritage Concert takes the music of Connections and places it in a second setting of great visual and acoustic beauty: The Great Synagogue, Sydney. The venue is the only high Victorian style Synagogue in Australia. This Synagogue represents one of the most elaborately decorated Victorian buildings in Sydney, both internally and externally. The building also represents one of the finest works of the leading NSW architect Thomas Rowe and it contains magnificent examples of the highest quality decorative work in moulded plaster, carved sandstone and timber, metalwork, tiling and stained glass. In this stunning setting, enjoy the magic of Kim Walker for a second time in a festive concert designed to benefit an iconic heritage building on its 134th anniversary, in the presence of prominent Sydney personalities.
