What we Play

The orchestra's repertory is chosen by our conductor Mathias Rogala-Koczorowski in consultation with the orchestra's committee. Our programmes are devised to contain fine music which is both challenging and enjoyable for the orchestra to play, while at the same time having appeal to our loyal audience. We consciously endeavour to select music that involves all members of the orchestra in an interesting and satisfying way. As a consequence, the bulk of our repertory is from the 19th century western symphonic canon with a healthy smattering of orchestral showpieces, although increasingly, we are venturing into the twentieth century and, indeed, the twenty-first century. We will from time to time also perform works from the classsical and baroque periods, and occasionally put on works for strings only or, more rarely, winds only.

To give a flavour of the variety of the orchestra's repertory, some of the works we have put on in our short history are listed below:

  • Haydn - London Symphony
  • Borodin - Symphony No. 2, Prince Igor Overture
  • Beethoven - Symphonies 5&8
  • Bruckner - Symphony No.4 "The Romantic"
  • Tchaikovsky - Serenade for Strings
  • Elgar - Enigma Variations
  • Rossini - William Tell Overture
  • Sibelius - Symphony No. 2
  • Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 2
  • Mozart - Haffner Symphony
  • Britten - Young Persons' Guide to the Orchestra
  • Turina - El Processione del Roccio
  • Janacek - Sinfonietta
  • Arthur Benjamin - Cotillon Suite
  • Katchaturian - Violin Concerto
  • Richard Strauss - Horn Concerto No.2
  • Prokoviev - Romeo & Juliet Suites
  • Holst - The Planets
  • Wagner - Prelude to Die Maestersinger, excerpts from “The Ring of the Nibelung”

In addition to music from the Western mainstream we have also performed a number of works by Australian composers, including our very own Joe Wolfe who plays woodwinds in the orchestra, as well as works by prominent Sydney composer Romano Crivici and our patron Peter Sculthorpe (including a world premiere performance of the Burke and Wills Suite in 2002).

For details of this year's programme see the 2006 concert programme.
