After a year without a full orchestra the Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to be opening the doors to Saint Columba Uniting Church where we will once again be BACK IN BLOOM.

Picking up where we left off, BACK IN BLOOM will open the 2021 concert season with a burst of brilliance in Shostakovich's very first opus, a rarely performed concert Scherzo in what will be the Australian premiere performances of this dazzling work. During the 2020 restrictions, the WPO was extremely fortunate to again partner up with The Sydney International Piano Competition and we presented a series of online performances with some very talented pianists. The WPO is thrilled to welcome back one of these competition laureates, pianist, Quang Hong Luu who will perform the magnificent, Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor, a masterpiece in the piano concerto repertory which also inspired Grieg’s work in the same genre.

This concert concludes with Mendelssohn's  final Symphony, Number 5. A work of great power, solemnity, and exuberance. Largely neglected from the concert halls, this outstanding symphony deserves much more notoriety than the cannons of time have graced it with, so we are delighted to present it to you in this program.

The Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes conductor Warwick Tyrrell to direct this much anticipated, landmark concert.
